An intimate, creative getaway for aspiring female letterers
4-6 October 2019
Haworth, West Yorkshire
A perfectly planned weekend to escape to the beautiful Yorkshire moors giving you the headspace to learn and create, enjoy lovely company and feast on delicious food.
Leave behind the to-do lists and busyness of life and join me for two days planned around my beginners calligraphy and lettering workshops. You’ll be joined by a small group of like-minded women to take the time to slow down, recharge and learn something new. We’ll be warmly hosted by Weavers Guesthouse, a 4* bed and breakfast of which we’ll have exclusive use for the weekend- positioned right on Haworth’s famous cobbled street and literally steps from the Brontë Parsonage. Myself along with the owners of Weavers Guesthouse, Brendan and Josie, have designed a perfectly balanced itinerary. Every detail has been thought of, so just pack a bag, bring a friend and we’ll take care of the rest.
what to expect
A lovely and unique two days in the heart of Brontë Country designed to give you the creative headspace you need to learn and create and just go slow.
We’ll begin each day with delicious cooked breakfast followed by a three-hour workshop.
After Saturday’s workshop, we’ll have lunch and then you can choose how to spend your afternoon. Have a wander down Haworth’s cobbled street, or take a walk on the moors or visit the Brontë Parsonage (tickets provided!). I’ll also be holding one-to-one sessions that you can book for feedback and guidance.
We’ll come together again in the evening to wine and dine and enjoy each other’s company. Weavers’ owner, Brendan, is a very talented trained chef and his food is delish! Late night wine chats are absolutely welcome.
Following Sunday’s workshop and lunch, you are free to continue exploring Haworth, peruse my calligraphy supplies shop, or use the space and time to continue practicing.
create space to create
Practicing calligraphy and lettering is such a wonderful way to clear your mind, calm any anxieties and focus on one thing at a time. Take this chance to really take yourself away, enjoy the workshops and also enjoy the added bonus of not having to rush off after a workshop is finished.
Friday 4th October
Check-in Friday afternoon from 3:30pm.
At 7pm, we will be enjoying welcome drinks and an informal light supper, which is optional. Here you’ll receive your welcome bags full of goodies. Enjoy a glass of wine and meet some of your fellow attendees before heading to bed ready for a full day ahead.
Saturday 5th October
Start the day with a home-cooked breakfast, made from delicious, locally-sourced fare.
After breakfast, I will teach my first workshop, Introduction to Modern Calligraphy. This workshop will introduce you to the basics of modern calligraphy, how to use your tools and we’ll go through the entire alphabet. Then we’ll move onto creating words, sentences and learn tips to create your own modern calligraphy style.
We will have lunch together and you will have the afternoon to spend how you wish. Explore the Brontë Parsonage, wander through Haworth’s famous cobbled streets or take your self off for a walk on the local moors. Feel free to take the time and space to continue practicing your calligraphy or have a nap- whatever you need! I’ll also be holding one-to-one sessions which you can book to ask any calligraphy questions, seek guidance or see more demonstrations.
We’ll come back together in the evening for a relaxing sit-down meal, family style, to talk about the day, have a laugh and continue building friendships we’ve made so far.
Sunday 6th October
We’ll start the day again with another yummy breakfast, followed by my Watercolour Brush Lettering Workshop. Add another skill and style to your creative tool belt. This workshop teaches you how to use a round brush to create calligraphy and lettering styles and we’ll be playing in colourful watercolours. I’ll go through ways to change up the style of your lettering and show you step-by-step how to create your own watercolour artwork.
After the workshop, we will have lunch together. If you need to head off, not to worry, you can take a pack lunch to go.
You will need to check out of your room by 2:30pm, but Brendan and Josie are happy to keep your bags safe if you’d like to continue exploring Haworth or use the time to practice your new lettering skills.
This is an all-inclusive two day retreat for aspiring female letterers and we’ve designed it to give you a perfect balance of time to create, explore and recharge. We have taken care of almost everything so you can just pack a bag and come meet us!

frequently asked questions

We have exclusive use of Weavers Guesthouse for the weekend which have 6 rooms. The maximum number of attendees will be 8-11 depending on which accommodation options are booked first as they are first come, first served.
Is this retreat for women only?
Yes. My workshops and classes are open to both men and women, but this retreat has been designed for women creatives only.
If I book a single occupancy room, can I bring someone along that doesn’t attend the workshops?
No. This is to insure we maintain the integrity and atmosphere we have designed for this event. We want to make sure you get the best time away to focus and recharge and build good relationships and much of this happens during the time outside of the workshops.
Can I join, but stay somewhere else?
No. A integral part of this retreat is the community and relationships built during the times outside of workshops and that is really special. All guests will be staying at Weavers Guesthouse.
What’s the closest train station?
Keighley Train Station is about a 10 minutes drive away.
I’ve never done any calligraphy or lettering before, will that be ok?
Absolutely, both of my workshops are designed to introduce you to the art of calligraphy and brush lettering.
I feel I’m beyond the beginners stage of my lettering journey, is this retreat beneficial for me?
The workshops planned for this retreat are designed for beginners. That being said, if you’ve never had any formal teaching in either one or both, then it may still be beneficial. It would be hard for me to say not seeing your work and the decision would be yours. In future, there may be other retreats aimed at intermediate lettering, watch this space.
